WHY HUMANE EDUCATION IS RIGHT FOR YOUR SCHOOL OR GROUP
Pet Orphans believes humane education is the long-term solution to pet abuse, neglect, abandonment
and overpopulation. Our program addresses these issues, along with teaching kindness, empathy and
a respect for all living things.
We teach responsible pet ownership, including spaying and neutering, the importance of regular medical
care, and a lifetime commitment to that animal. Also, since dog bites are a major concern for children,
our program teaches animal safety and dog bite prevention.
The link between cruelty to animals and violence toward people has been well established. And the way
children care for their pet transfers to the way they treat other people and how they will care for
their own children as adults. These facts support the need for humane education programs.
The Pet Orphans Program
Our program consists of seven age-appropriate presentations which are informative, fun, and
interactive. All of our Humane Education presentations are FREE of charge. However, any
donation is gladly accepted, and will help us to reach even more people with this important
message.
Grades Pre-K thru 3rd
(Empathy with Animals/Animal Safety)
Verbal, Poster Boards, Puppet and/or Live Animal, Handout materials
This presentation focuses on fostering empathy with animals, talks about animal cruelty,
and how and when to safely approach a dog, since dog bites are one of the major reasons children
are taken to the Emergency Room. A realistic (very well-received) dog puppet helps demonstrate the
dog safety portion. We leave behind individual packages with a coloring book (in English and Spanish)
that reinforces the lessons taught, a colorful certificate to also help them remember what they've
learned, and dog and cat stickers. (If scheduling permits and a dog is allowed on campus, a Delta
certified therapy dog and handler can be available to accompany the speaker for a hands-on demonstration
for the children.)
Test your knowledge of dog safety.

Grades 2nd and 3rd
(City Wildlife--"Who's Sharing Your Neighborhood?")
Verbal, Video (VHS or DVD), Interactive Lesson, Pictures/Props/Puppet, Handout materials
This presentation teaches students about some of the different wildlife that share their own neighborhoods. Through a short video
and interactive classroom lessons, the students learn about the habitats, food, behavior and jobs of several different animals,
birds, reptiles and insects, and how we can live in harmony with these creatures. They learn to respect them by observing them,
learning about them, and then leaving them alone to do the jobs that benefit us and our planet. Fun "creature" behaviors
like camouflage, "playing opossum", shedding their skin", etc. are discussed. A package containing a wildlife bookmark,
fun and informative worksheets, and wildlife stickers are left behind for each student, along with complimentary "grade appropriate"
lesson plans for each teacher.
This presentation utilizes an interactive classroom game to teach what is required to be a responsible pet
owner. It deals with animal abuse and abandonment, spaying and neutering, the basic needs of a pet, and
stresses a lifetime commitment to that animal. An animal "prop" quiz further teaches the various
needs of different pets, and how important it is to learn about your animals so you can care for them
properly. A package containing a colorful bookmark, fun and informative worksheets, and dog and cat stickers
are left behind for each student.
Grades 4th and Above
(Careers with Animals)
Verbal, Poster Boards, Career Props, Handout materials
This presentation utilizes a different interactive classroom game to help students discover
the many opportunities available for them to work with animals. Working in the health field,
with humane organizations, wildlife, behavior and training, your own business and the various
artistic and specialty careers are discussed, along with educational requirements, how to get
valuable job experience, and potential salary and other rewards. In addition to regular classroom
presentations, this program can be modified for special Career Day programs. Fun and informative
career worksheets and career research materials are available for each student.
Grades 7th thru 12th
(Responsible Pet Ownership/"Picking the Right Pet")
Verbal, Poster Boards, Video, Handout materials
This presentation deals with animal cruelty, abandonment, and overpopulation including the importance
of spaying and neutering. It also teaches responsible pet ownership; educating the owner as well as the
pet, and picking the right pet for each family or individual circumstances so you can make a lifetime
commitment to that animal. An interactive Powerpoint presentation allows the students to become Adoption
Counselors to learn matching the right pet to the right family.
Grades 7th thru 12th
(The Cruelty Connection/Responsible Pet Ownership)
Verbal, Videos, Handout materials
This presentation helps students to recognize the connection between violence against animals and violence
against people, and how they can stop animal cruelty. We teach them ways to educate their friends and family
about the cruelty link, get help for the animal, and how to be a responsible pet owner; including spaying
and neutering, training, and making a lifetime commitment to that animal. The Humane Society's First Strike
Animal Cruelty/Human Violence video is shown, along with "Disposable Pets", a film made by Pet Orphans
to teach the responsibilities that go along with sharing your life with an animal companion.
This presentation focuses on the reality of millions of homeless dogs and cats who are euthanized in city shelters
because of overpopulation, lack of spaying/neutering, and people not accepting the responsibility for caring for
their animals for their lifetime. The video, "Disposable Pets", made by Pet Orphans especially for this
presentation, shows us the reality of irresponsible pet ownership and what we can do as concerned citizens to help
end animal overpopulation.
