Rhonda and her husband Bob live with their dog, Rigley, who was adopted from Pet Orphans of Southern California and a cat, Mr. Biggs, who Bob rescued off a busy street when just a tiny kitten. During their 15 years of marriage, Rhonda and Bob have had four dogs, two cats, a bird, and several fish.

There is something about Rhonda that sets animals at ease. Perhaps when they hear her soothing voice and feel her gentle touch, they sense the caring and compassion that has been integral to her 20 years of practice as a Registered Nurse.

Rhonda has grown to understand the special needs of shelter dogs and cats. She has volunteered at Pet Orphans since 2002 as a dog and cat socializer, dog walker, adoption counselor, and dog bather and groomer. In previous years she was recognized as Pet Orphans' "Most Valuable Volunteer Dog Walker", "Dog Volunteer of the Year", and "Volunteer of the Year".

It is no secret that Rhonda's favorite activity at Pet Orphans is performing makeovers on the new arrivals following their rescue from the city shelters. Many are fearful and distressed, but Rhonda is able to handle dogs with all sorts of issues, even in compromised situations such as grooming.

Once Rhonda has given flea baths, pulled ticks and foxtails from their coats, and treated ear mites, the scruffy dogs get haircuts. The transformations can be quite remarkable after the grime is washed away and the matted hair is removed. Rhonda's biggest reward is knowing that they will get the most comfortable night of sleep they have had in a long, long time.

When the newcomers are given a clean bill of health, Rhonda works with staff and volunteers on socializing, basic training, and general care of the orphans until they find loving families of their own. Finally, Rhonda gives farewell baths before they go with their new families into their forever homes.
